Research & Development

The Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK) performs research and development for companies in the field of marine technology. MARINTEK is a company in SINTEF, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, and develops and vertifies technological solutions, business and operating concepts for the shipping, marine equipment, ocean energy and petroleum industries. MARINTEK’s headquarters and labaratories are in Trondheim, Norway.

Research Activities
MARINTEK’s principal R&D activities focus on:

  • Offshore hydrodynamics
  • Structural engineering
  • Ship technology
  • Maritime transport systems
  • Energy systems and environment

Offshore Oil and Gas Industry
Simpler concepts for lower investment costs, lower running costs and maintained operability is a continuous objective of offshore oil and gas industry. MARINTEK has the same objective and contributes with competence and technology.

We have worked extensively with international oil companies, equipment suppliers and engineering companies providing solutions for oil and gas fields worldwide. This includes areas like Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West-Africa, South-East Asia and Australia.

  • Floating systems
  • Structural analysis and testing
  • Marine operations
  • Efficient operations

Shipping and Maritime Industry
MARINTEK has more than 60 years of experience in the development of cost-effective, high performance ships, where model testing constitutes the important element. We have excellent technological expertise in the following strategic areas; Hydrodynamics, Cybernetics and Structures, Energy Technology and Logistics. These core technologies are our main assets available to our customers and their product development.

  • Ship and vehicle performance
  • Wave loads and structural response – Ships and sea structures
  • Operations and manoeuvring
  • Shipping and logistics
  • Equipment systems performance

Renewable Energy and Environment

Emission to air is the greatest challenge for the shipping industry. MARINTEK provides technology development for improving energy consumption and reduction of emissions. MARINTEK also offers measurement services on site of documentation for energy and emission profile.

  • Environmentally friendly energy concepts for ships, including LNG as fuel
  • Retrofitting of geen technologies for ships
  • Measurement services for documentation of energy consumption and emission to air

Laboratory facilities

  • Ocean basin
  • Towing tanks
  • Cavitation laboratory
  • Marine structures laboratory
  • Energy-/machinery laboratory

Deep insight – high ambitions
In 2014, we will celebrate that the R&D activity at Tyholt, Trondheim, started 75 years ago. Our towing tank was officially opened on September the 1st, 1939, after many years of planning and implementation. In the wake of the establishment of the Towing tank, a significant and well recognized research community has developed at Tyholt through MARINTEK and the Department of Marine Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, with leading laboratories in many fields of research. Our prime ambition is to play a leading role when it comes to the conquest of the oceans. For this purpose we plan investments in modern infrastructure and tools within the future knowledge centre, the Ocean Space Centre
