Transport 2025 (TRANSPORT)

Activities under the Transport 2025 programme will employ a systemic perspective on the transport system viewed as a whole. The programme will address transport issues related to road, rail, sea and air traffic, and include passenger as well as freight transport. In addition, the programme will address challenges facing each of the four modes of transport and the interaction between them. The transport system viewed in a unified perspective and the need for change have provided key guiding principles for a new, integrated research initiative in the area of transport.

The Transport 2025 programme will generate new knowledge and innovations for use in the development of future transport systems. The programme will also promote a more sustainable transport system within the financial, social and environmental frameworks. Knowledge generated under the programme will help to develop a competitive industrial sector and a reliable, safe and universal transport system that will benefit individuals and society at large.

The preliminary work programme identifies seven thematic priority areas:

  • Improved mobility;
  • A competitive Norwegian private sector;
  • Greater transport safety and security;
  • Sustainable urbanisation and regionalisation;
  • Improved climatic and environmental conditions;
  • Future-oriented infrastructure;
  • Overall perspectives on the transport system.

At present, activities under the programme will incorporate the following five structural priorities:

  • Promoting cross-sectoral perspectives;
  • Helping to enhance quality;
  • Working to build capacity;
  • Ensuring relevance in relation to knowledge needs;
  • Targeting innovation and change.
