Leading satellite equipment manufacturer Thrane & Thrane makes its first step into the VSAT arena with the introduction of a maritime VSAT solution and network in September 2008. Thrane & Thrane will offer the new SAILOR 900 VSAT and various fixed broadband data packages at attractive flat rates plus additional voice channels, addressing the professional maritime market.

With fixed standard data and voice packages of up to 1024 kbps downlink / 256 kbps uplink and additional voice channels, the SAILOR 900 VSAT is Thrane & Thrane's next step in providing a cost effective, always-on broadband solution.

As a standard feature, the SAILOR 900 VSAT comes with built-in VoIP adapter and routing management technology, offering owners of existing Thrane & Thrane manufactured Fleet or FleetBroadband products a unique and integrated VSAT add-on solution, allowing ship operators to be online at all times with the benefit of cutting communication costs while sailing inside the SAILOR 900 VSAT coverage area.

"VSAT will become an even more important component to a vessel's overall communications solution as the expanding Ku-Band network will enable it to move from its traditional regional coverage into multi regional shipping highways, enabling global operating merchant vessels to benefit from the fixed, low cost data it offers for longer periods," comments Walther Thygesen, CEO, Thrane & Thrane. "We see SAILOR 900 VSAT as a complement to our very successful Inmarsat based Fleet and FleetBroadband systems, in that a combination of both will provide tangible benefits in cost, functionality and global operation."

With an antenna dish size of 90cm and a weight of 60kg, SAILOR 900 VSAT is lighter and more compact than other Ku-Band antennas in its class, making it easier and more cost-effective to install, whilst at the same time offering always-on broadband IP communication ideal for heavy data transfer, crew internet and e-mail, as well as the option of multiple voice channels.

SAILOR 900 VSAT enables a vessel to become an integral part of the shipping company's IT network, with such applications as:

- Always-on broadband connections at fixed airtime costs per month
- Low cost Voice over IP (VoIP) tariffs
- Seamless shift from SAILOR VSAT to SAILOR Fleet or SAILOR FleetBroadband and vice versa
- Remote IT and systems maintenance, software and chart (ECDIS) updates
- Separated IT networks on board, i.e. one for operational use, one for crew
- Enhancing crew welfare, i.e. crew internet, email, voice calling, etc.

The SAILOR 900 VSAT is backed by Thrane & Thrane's own network, developed in close co-operation with Telesat Canada, offering a one-stop-shop VSAT solution with equipment and airtime. Thrane & Thrane will market, sell and support the SAILOR 900 VSAT package through dedicated VSAT Partners within the existing group of Thrane & Thrane Maritime Partners.
