Sympathy for Norway in EU gas debate

Norway is slowly scoring points in its disagreement with the European Union over a controversial EU directive on gas liberalisation, according to Norwegian energy officials. Arguing that an open gas market would undermine the long-term security of supplies, Norwegian officials have convinced some EU nations to support a delay in full implementation of the EU Gas Directive while negotiations continue on the terms. Norwegian leaders say investment in field developments and pipelines will wane if today's comprehensive, long-term "take-or-pay" contracts are put aside in favour of short-term competition among suppliers.
