Survey shows less escaped farmed salmon

A recent survey show that there are now less escaped farmed salmon found in Norway's rivers.

Surveys of over 26,000 salmon in 62 rivers across the country in 2011 and 2012 show that the proportion of escaped farmed salmon is lower than expected. Summed across the country, the proportion of escaped salmon is 4.5 per cent in 2011 and 2.5 per cent in 2012.

This is demonstrated by projects that are fully funded by the Aquaculture Industry Environment Fund.

Since 2011 the fund has allocated over 17 million to survey escaped salmon in 62 rivers in western Norway, central Norway and northern Norway. The projects are carried out under the auspices of the river owners themselves or by external experts with expertise in the wild.
