Success for commercialisation

Norinnova AS and TTO Nord AS are making a success of the Research Council of Norway’s Commercialisation of R&D Results (FORNY) programme.

Three of their four verification applications have been selected from strong competition among 55 projects nationally. Norinnova has responsibility for two of the projects, while TTO Nord is responsible for one. The three projects have a combined scope of nearly NOK 7 million.

The projects to gain grants are:

“GSAR SUS – Proof of Concept Application”
Commercialisation of a technology from Norut Tromsø’s Department of Earth Observation. GSAR shall handle the sales and marketing of a product within the processing of satellite-based data. The project has a scope of NOK 2.3 million, and was allocated NOK 1.2 million for the first phase.

“Unmanned aerial systems for cost effective power line inspection”
A project within surveillance using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) attached to Norut Tromsø’s Department of Earth Observation. The project has a total scope of NOK 1.5 million, and was allocated NOK 860,000 for the project’s first phase.

“New lead compound for tuberculosis treatment”
A project to develop a new medication for the treatment of tuberculosis from the University of Tromsø. The project has a scope of NOK 2.9 million, and was allocated NOK 604,000 for the project’s first phase.

This is a great recognition for applied research in Northern Norway. North Norwegian research environments are behind three of the 16 project to receive grants. The applications were assessed by independent expert panels and our projects were selected as the best. This is of great importance for business development because the verification grants provide funding at a stage before investors are willing to enter with capital.

Applications may be made for the Reach Council of Norway’s verification grants for Commercialisation of R&D results (FORNY) twice annually. The deadline for application for the next round is September 2010. Applications must be lodged via commercialisation companies. In Northern Norway, Norinnova and TTO Nord fall into this category.

We encourage scientists and research groups with projects that may be developed into new companies or are relevant for the business community to contact Norinnova and TTO Nord to see if concepts can be developed together that make the grade in the next national round of FORNY grants.
