Statoil has discovered what may turn out to be a new great oil field off the coast of Troendelag.

The company believed the Elida Field contained only natural gas, but the drill ship "West Navigator" has now hit oil deposits, Aftenposten reports.

Statoil does not want to speculate about the possibilities.
-There is a great uncertainty around such test drillings. We have not finished these drillings, and do not want to comment further at this time, Statoil spokesman Kristofer Hetland says.

The Elida Field is located at a ocean depth of 1,200 metres, and commercially viable finds have not been discovered in Norway before.
