Science Forum South Africa coming up

The Department of Science and Technology, co-financer of SANCOOP, is hosting the Science Forum later this year with the theme “Igniting conversations about science”. The purpose is threefold:

  • To create a platform for a vibrant debate on the role of science, technology and innovation and society in South Africa;
  • To strengthen South Africa’s strategic international science, technology and innovation partnerships;
  • To create a platform for senior government leaders, academics, scientists, industry, civil society, and students to interact.

International partners are asked to encourage their researchers to submit thematic session proposals. The deadline for submission is very close, 14 September, but there are indications that this deadline may be extended.

The Science Forum will in any case be an excellent opportunity for researchers in Norway to link up with South African colleagues and possibly forge partnerships that will result in the preparation of joint research proposals in response to international calls, particularly within Horizon 2020. Both Norway and South Africa are associated members. The experience from FP7 show that collaboration between South African researchers pays off: Proposals with a participation of researchers from the two countries had a success rate of 30.5 %, much higher than the success rates of proposals submitted by South Africans or Norwegians without any international partners.

To learn more about the Science Forum and the criteria for thematic session proposals can be found on the Forum's web-page.
