Salmon farmers toe the line

The price of Norwegian farmed salmon in Europe has fallen to an average NOK 26.6 per kilogram (USD 2.80/kg), which is only slightly above the minimum price that Norwegian salmon exporters are permitted to charge under an agreement with the European Union.

Norwegian salmon farmers hope to achieve unrestricted access to EU markets by 2002, but that goal is dependent on maintaining stable production levels and prices that are consistently above the minimum. The agreement was designed to secure the competitiveness of Scottish and Irish aquaculture.
