Researchers Reduce the Environmental Impact of Farmed Salmon in the Wild

The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science is carrying out a PhD project with the Institute of Marine Research focusing on the use of sterile salmon in aquaculture as means to prevent escaped farmed salom interbreeding with wild salmon.

The method used is known as triploidy to induce sterility to Atlantic salmon.

Results are suggesting that in order to successfully integrate triploid salmon into the industry, some modification are required to  the current protocols used today to prevent heart and skeletal deformiites.

Salmon farming is one of the major industries in Norway, however environmental concerns remain  in the sector. The industry will need to work on its effects on the wild salom population and hundreds of thousands of farmed salom are reported to escape in Norway Each year. When these fish breed with wild salom they can create hybrids that are less adapted for life in the wild.
