Research Council updates Norwegian Roadmap for Research Infrastructure

A total of 57 projects involving large-scale laboratories, databases and advanced scientific equipment of particular importance for Norwegian research are included on the updated Norwegian roadmap. Thirteen of these have been newly added.

The Norwegian Roadmap for Research Infrastructure is part of the Research Council of Norway’s strategy to ensure that research groups in Norway have access to modern facilities and up-to-date equipment, and that funding is awarded to nationally oriented projects of major strategic importance to Norwegian research activities.

Thorough assessment of quality and strategic relevance

All 57 of the projects included on the roadmap have been assessed in-depth with regard to their scientific merit and strategic relevance for Norwegian research. Projects on the roadmap must be large-scale, nationally oriented research infrastructures which have either been awarded funding under calls for proposals in 2014 or earlier or are otherwise deemed worthy of support by the Research Council.

The update of the Norwegian roadmap adds another 13 key infrastructure items to the list of large-scale laboratories, databases and advanced scientific equipment defined as being of national importance for research, bringing the total to 57.

Most of the projects on the roadmap have already received funding and are either fully established or in the implementation phase. Four of the included projects are considered to be of such high quality and strategic importance that the Research Council considers them worthy of realisation but funding for them has not been available within existing financial frameworks.

Continued need for funding

“After six years of significant investment in research facilities, equipment and databases under the Research Council’s National Financing Initiative for Research Infrastructure, we are entering a phase where it becomes important to renew and upgrade existing research infrastructures,” explains Anders Hanneborg, Executive Director of the Division for Science at the Research Council.

“At the same time, the grant applications we receive, as well as our own analyses, indicate a need to invest in a number of completely new infrastructures for several different scientific and technology areas,” he adds. 

The Research Council encourages research institutions planning to apply for infrastructure funding to study the relevant area strategies, which outline the strategic basis for the next allocation.
