Record number of international university applicants in Stavanger

A record 6,000 students from 70 different nations applied for university programs in Stavanger on the west coast of Norway in 2012.

Never before have this many international students applied for university in Stavanger. 330 out of almost 6,000 students have been accepted and are ready to start their studies on the west coast of Norway this fall.

"We try to spread the accepted students geographically so that there is not a big group of students from one specific country or certain geographical area," explains senior consultant Joachim Kallevig at the university. "This year all continents are represented," he says.

Kallevig does not think that low Norwegian tuition fees is the reason why a record-high number of international students wish to come to Norway. "In our internal evaluations the cost was rated the seventh most important factor," he says.

The most important factor listed by students was the programs offered by the university. Kallevig also adds that the university has a good reputation, and that the job opportunities after university are much better in Norway than in many other parts of Europe. "After all, there's a financial crisis going on in the world."
