Record high salmon export in January

In January 2014 salmon to the value of NOK 3.7 billion was exported.This is an increase of NOK 1 billion compared to January last year, and the highest ever for the same month, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Norwegian Seafood CouncilSalmon exported in January amounted to 74,480 tonnes, which is around the same level as last year.

“The growing popularity of salmon, combined with a stable supply is the main reason for the growth we are seeing," says Bjørn-Erik Stabell, Marketing Manager for Salmon in the Norwegian Seafood Council.

 

Strong salmon price

The price for fresh whole salmon was NOK 48.90 in January.This is NOK 14.24 higher than in the same month last year.The price in January was 2 per cent higher than the average price in December.

Growth in value for export to EU

Measured in value export to the EU was 34 per cent higher than the same month last year.Volumes to the EU were around the same level as last year.France, Poland and Russia were the biggest markets measured in volume for Norwegian salmon in January, despite these countries being in a recession compared to last year.The decline in volumes for these countries was countered by a strong increase in exports to other countries in the EU, including Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Growth in value for export to Russia

Salmon export to Russia measured in value was 16 per cent higher than in January 2013. Volumes fell by 20 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Increase for exports to Asia and the USA

The growth in value for the entire Asian market was 57 per cent.This growth is driven by strong prices and the fact that the Asian market bought 10 per cent more salmon in January than for the same time last year.Vietnam and Hong Kong stand out as with the biggest increases in volume.

Export of salmon to the USA is seeing the same good trends as previous months, and was 130 higher in terms of value compared to the same month last year.The reason for this growth can be attributed to a combination of good prices and greater volumes.

Norwegian fjord trout seeing stability

Export of Norwegian fjord trout, measured in value, ended at the same level as in 2013 at NOK 205 million.At the same time, the volumes fell by 33 per cent.Russia was our biggest market for Norwegian fjord trout last month.
