Petrofac orders a Kongsberg Maritime dynamic simulator for the Kauther Gas Plant in Oman

Petrofac International Ltd has contracted Kongsberg Maritime to supply a dynamic simulator for the Kauther Gas Plant and Associated Facilities.

Petrofac International Ltd has contracted Kongsberg Maritime to supply a dynamic simulator for the Kauther Gas Plant and Associated Facilities. This is the third in a series of simulators delivered to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) at its facilities in Muscat, Oman. Replicating three interconnecting gas plants, the simulators can be run either as a single integrated simulator or as individual plant simulators.

All three dynamic simulators are designed with the capability of being used for engineering and training purposes. This dual use maximises the cost benefits of the devices throughout the life of the plant.

The Kauther dynamic simulator is based on the ASSETT concept developed by Kongsberg Maritime for advanced process simulators and adapted to the specific requirements of the process facilities at Kauther, combined with a semi-stimulated Distributed Control System (DCS) based on the YOKOGAWA CENTUM 3000 SERIES.

The Kauther dynamic simulator is implemented as a system of hardware and software in which mathematical models of the processes are used to represent the various process items, so as to reproduce the plant behaviour and provide a realistic, but safe and manageable, engineering and training environment. All the necessary control and logic is included within the ASSETT modelling, with the real DCS providing the HMI, alarm handling and trending capabilities for the operator.

An early version of the simulator will be used for process, control and logic engineering evaluation, whereas the later training version of the simulator will include the real DCS equipment. The early version of the simulator, which contains the full process model along with control and logic functionality, will be delivered to  the Petrofac offices in Sharjah for the use by their engineers for dynamic analysis of the process facilities. The training version of the simulator will be delivered to the PDO training centre at Mina al Fahal (Muscat) in Oman.
