Oslo to host Kyoto rescue mission?

Oslo may host an international meeting this month to rescue the 1997 Kyoto treaty on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to the NTB news agency.

Last month's summit meeting in the Netherlands collapsed without an agreement on how the world should proceed on the issue, with European nations favouring strict measures and the United States desiring less ambitious targets. A follow-up session to the Dutch meeting was held in Ottawa last week, after which David Anderson, the Canadian environmental minister, said some of the opposing positions had been bridged. NTB based its report on a possible meeting in Oslo on comments from unnamed participants in the Ottawa session.
