An optimization project shall develop, optimize and / or examine potential applications for results and concepts generated from previous biotechnology research with an aim to develop a future product, process or service. The existing results should have a clear commercial potential but needs development and conceptualization of the technology to adapt to a future commercial application.

The funding should be used for optimization of biotechnology research in the marine, agricultural and industrial sectors. It is believed to be a great potential in a multidisciplinary approach between the three sectors and BIOTEK2021 wants to facilitate synergies and interaction.
This year's optimisation announcement is slightly different from the announcements the previous years. The evaluation criteria are updated and should now be more unambiguous, the template for the project description has been updated and the implementation of the project assessment has been altered. The goal is to ease the writing of the project application and it should be easier to know exactly what is evaluated.
The involvement and relevance for society has been given a more pronounced role than in the past, and it is also more focus on showing that there is commercial potential of the technology.. The applicant is challenged to show a good understanding of what the final product is, who are going to use it and how it will be used. It can in such a way early be taken into account what activities are relevant also in its early stages of the project.
The potential best optimization projects will this year be invited to the Research Council's premises where they will have the opportunity to present their project to a panel of experts. There has been a desire from both former experts and former applicants that the projects get the opportunity to show more of their potential before they receive a final assessment. This can also be a unique opportunity for the good projects which do not reach up for funding to get direct feedback on how the next application can be improved.

Norway has unique access to raw materials and we have the ability to be world leading in different areas such as veterinary medicine, enzyme technology and genetic technology "says the programme coordinator of BIOTEK2021, Øystein Rønning.
