Why not more natural gas?

Natural gas contributes to cleaner combustion and reduced CO2 emissions. Natural gas, as the cleanest of the fossil fuels, can be used in many ways to help reduce the emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere. Burning natural gas in the place of other fossil fuels emits fewer harmful pollutants, and an increased reliance on natural gas can potentially reduce the emission of many of these most harmful pollutants. New discoveries and new technology has increased supply and reduced the price. Then, why are we not using more natural gas as an energy source? This topic will be discussed during the day, not least in the panel discussion

"Why not more natural gas?"

Panel: - Lord Moynihan,Former UK Minister of Energy- Prof. Dieter Helm, Oxford University- Prof.Dr. Marc Oliver Bettzüge, University of Cologne

Safety lunch with Hans Henrik Ramm

According to Hans Henrik Ramm, the petroleum industry is filled with safety-related paradoxes, more and more of which have become apparent in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon accident.

One example is the learning paradox. After every major accident we see that we actually already knew how to do things the right way. But something still went wrong. Why doesn’t the industry learn?

Another paradox is related to technological development. The industry has proven its ability to perform technological miracles. But why is there not more innovation within the safety and preparedness area?

The PSA Award

The safety lunch will conclude with the award of the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway’s HSE award, “The PSA Award”. This is an award given to a person or organisation that has made a strong and visible contribution to the safety work in the Norwegian petroleum industry.

The prize will be awarded in connection with the HSE lunch during ONS, for the fourth time this year.

Previous award recipients:

2006: Professor Torgeir Moan

2008: OLF's gas leak project

2010: Vidar Bernt Sørensen

Young Professional Company Award 2012

The Young Professional Company Award gives young professionals an opportunity to express their views on the future of the petroleum and energy industries. The Young Professional Company Award was inaugurated in 2002 and has become a popular addition to the conference, and an excellent way for the companies to showcase both themselves and their employees.

An important factor is that the groups get the opportunity to express themselves freely and thus say what they really mean about the topic in question. It is also an excellent opportunity for the young professionals to establish industry-wide networks. The winning team 2012 will be presented Thursday.

The four finalists are

- Statoil- ConocoPhillips- DNV- Aker Solutions

Previous winners:

2002:  Det Norske Veritas (DNV)

2004:  Det Norske Veritas (DNV)

2006:  Norwegian Petroleum Directorate

2008:  Norske Shell

2010:  Rystad Energy
