100 ocean-going trawlers and other powerful fishing boats will become part of Norway's contingency plan for combatting oil pollution.

100 ocean-going trawlers and other powerful fishing boats will become part of Norway's contingency plan for combatting oil pollution.

An agremment to this end was been signed by the Fisheries Minister Svein Ludvigsen and the Fishingboat Owners Assiciation in Aalesund on Friday.

The vessels will be called in to handle emergencies in connection with large oil tankers which could be in danger of drifting ashore along the Norwegian coast, until larger tugboats arrive.

Ludvigsen underlined that this is only one of several measures which will be introduced to secure the Norwegian coast against possible oil spills from floundering oil tankers.

The authorities have become increasingly concerned over the increasing traffic along the Norwegian coast by large oil tankers carrying crude oil from Northern Russia to world markets.
