The Norwegian and Russian business communities in the North are hoping that a new raillink between Kirkenes and the Russian industrial city of Nikel will become a reality soon.

The estimated cost of the new railway is set at NOK 1.4 billion, NRK reports.

The proposal calls for an extension of the railroad from Zapoljarnyj near Nikel to Kirkenes, and an upgrading of the trracks between Zapoljarnyj and Murmansk.

It will take 40 kilometres of new tracks to link Eastern Finnmark to the Russian railroad network.

It is estimated that around 3 million tonnes of goods will be transported on the new railroad each year.

The Russians plan to transport minerals and oil, and Kirkenes has already applied for a lisence to become a new transit harbour for Russian oil.
