The CAS International Cooperation Award for Young Scientists were awarded for the first time. Larssen and Feng received the price on 7 June for their extensive research cooperation on mercury in the environment.

Their collaborative research has particularly focussed on mercury pollution in Southwest China's Guizhou Province, covering aspects such as mercury pollution sources, transport and fate, and the exposure and risk of mercury pollution to human health and the environment. They have published 12 joint scientific papers the last 5 years, given several conference presentations together and co-supervised PhD students.
Larssen was a visiting Professor at Feng's institute in 2011 and Feng has several times visited the Norwegian Institute for Water Research. Their research cooperation is currently being extended to cover mercury pollution beyond China to also include pollution issues in Norway and the Arctic.
The CAS International Cooperation Award for Young Scientists was awarded in four categories, Larssen and Feng received price in the category Natural Resources and Environment. The other categories are Basic Research, Life Sciences and Technology.
Thorjørn Larssen is Research Manager of the Contaminants in Freshwater Section at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research - NIVA. He is also Adjunct Professor in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Oslo. He is involved in three project financed through the RCN programme CHINOR.
Feng Xinbin is Deputy Director of Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
