Norwegian researchers successful in European ICT allocations

The results are in from the first funding round for ICT research under Horizon 2020, the EU framework programme for Research and Innovation. Norwegian researchers have a higher success rate than the average for the European countries.

Of the 122 Norwegian grant applications submitted, 17 were awarded funding. The average award percentage for applications submitted in this ICT round was 12 per cent, whereas Norway’s success rate was 15 per cent.

“We are pleased that funding was sought for so many Norwegian projects in this round, and even more pleased that so many were awarded funding,” states Arvid Hallén, Director General of the Research Council of Norway.

“If we want to draw greater attention to Norwegian research in an international context, we must take an international approach. Norway has many excellent research groups who would benefit from learning more about the wide range of opportunities that the Horizon 2020 framework programme entails,” he says.

Targeted efforts yield success

Simula Research Laboratory in Oslo distinguished itself particularly well, winning funding for four projects. “This is a positive outcome resulting from comprehensive, targeted efforts,” says Aslak Tveito, Managing Director at Simula. “We started working on our EU grant proposals back in the summer of 2013.”

Dr Tveito points to cooperation with the Research Council of Norway’s EU experts – the National Contact Points (NCP) – to the EU as particularly valuable support in the application process. “The Research Council has a wide array of advisers ready to assist researchers with their applications for EU funding. Ask us for help!,” encourages Arvid Hallén.
