Norway's broadband build-out

Tele1 Europe is about to start building a broadband fibre-optic network that will connect 1.2 million people, 17,500 businesses and 12 southern Norwegian cities.

The company will lay 450 km of high-speed fibre-optic cable from Kristiansand to Oslo and on to Halden near the Swedish border, where the new network will link up with Tele1 Europe's Nordic fibre-optic system. When combined with local broadband networks already in place in Oslo, Bergen and elsewhere, the new southern Norwegian network will mean that 75 percent of Norway's population will have broadband access next year. The network is to be extended to Fauske, Narvik and Tromsø in 2002.
