The Norwegian parliament approved on Friday industry's plans to develop the huge Ormen Lange gas field and build a pipeline to Britain.

The Norwegian parliament approved on Friday industry's plans to develop the huge Ormen Lange gas field and build a pipeline to Britain.

Due to come on stream in 2007, Ormen Lange is Norway's biggest current offshore development with total estimated costs of 66 billion Norwegian crowns ($9.61 billion).

The project is led by development phase operator Norsk Hydro which has an 18 percent stake in the field. Royal Dutch/Shell with 17 percent, will take over as operator in the production phase.
