Four out of the worlds five largest salmon farming companies are Norwegian, according to statistics presented by Intrafish.
However, the Dutch producer Nutreco is the largest.
Nutreco, which last year aquired Norsk Hydro's fish farms, last year produced 141,500 tons of salmonid fish, and will increase to an anticipated 165,000 tons this year.
Runners up are four Norwegian companies. These are Pan Fish, Stolt Sea Farm, Fjord Seafood and Statkorn Holding. All five Norwegian companies are increasing more than Nutreco.
Norwegian Fjord Seafood is responsible for the greatest rate of development. The company expects to increase last years production twofold in 2001. The reason for the tremendous growth is the companys shopping spree overseas.
With 85,000 tonnes Fjord has passed Stolt Sea Farm, and has now advanced to third place on the list of the worlds largest marine farming companies.
Pan Fish and Statkorn Holding are also expecting solid growth. They will be producing 51 per cent more salmon in 2001 than was the case in 2000, according to Intrafish.
