Norway Concerned about Civilian Casualties in Gaza Conflict

Norway Warns against Disproportionate Use of Force and collective punishment.

“We are deeply concerned about the reports of growing numbers of civilians killed and injured in Gaza and southern Israel following the acts of violence in recent days. The escalation of the violence is worrying, and any further escalation could have grave consequences. A great responsibility now rests on all parties to bring an end to the hostilities as quickly as possible,” said Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.

Eide also called on the Israeli authorities not to turn acts of self-defence into a collective punishment.

- The disproportionate use of force, beyond self-defence, is unacceptable. Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, and the risk of innocent lives being lost or civilians being injured is very high,” said Eide.

Since Israel’s attack began,  at Least 137 Palestinians, mainly children and civilians, have been killed since last Wednesday, while more than 950 have been injured.

Norwegian Foreign minister also stressed that the events of the last few days once again showed the policy of occupation has served to strengthen militant Palestinian groups.

- It is therefore essential to start negotiations on a two-state solution that allows Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace and security,” adds Eide.

Travel warning for Israel and the Palestinian Territory

Foreign Ministry also issued a new travel advice for southern Israel and the Palestinian territories on Monday, November 19. Norwegian authoirities advised all travellers to avoid from travelling to the region or to stay in the border area (40 miles) from Gaza. Also, foreign affairs advises against all travels to the West Bank.
