Norway and Britain plan power link

Statnett of Norway and British power company National Grid are planning to lay a huge a subsea power cable between Britain and Norway.

In dry years, when Norwegian hydropower reservoirs are low, and in very cold years when Norwegian power demand is high, Norway could import British power through the cable. Likewise, in rainy years like this one, Britain may find it economical to import Norwegian hydropower. Norway's Water and Electricity Authority (NVE) said concrete planning for the project is underway. As now conceived, the 700-km-long cable would enter Norway through Rogaland County on the southwestern coast. It would cost some USD 540 million (NOK 5 billion) and be completed by 2006.
