This project, which is jointly financed by the European Union and the MMA, is the first phase of Malta's ambition to achieve a full coverage of vessel traffic management around its shores and territorial waters.

Malta provides a whole range of international maritime services and facilities including: deep natural harbours and well equipped ports which offer a haven for international shipping, extensive bunkering, ship supplies and towage services, ship building and ship repair yards, modern facilities for transhipment and distribution, including a very successful container terminal and oil terminal, a hub for cruise liners, international yacht marinas and of course, an international ship register which is now established as one of the largest in the world.

“We are very pleased to announce our first major project with Ericsson,” comments Jan Anders Horntvedt, Managing Director, Norcontrol IT. “The MMA VTMIS project is wide in scope and will benefit from our experience in large scale maritime domain awareness solutions for both civil and military end-users.”

The Project is set to achieve the objectives of the EU Directive 2002/59/EC and includes installation of remote radar, a brand new Ericsson microwave network and a new VTS Centre for the MMA with delivery set for December 2006.

The networked radar will monitor both port and coastal traffic and shall be augmented by VHF radio, AIS and VHF-DF. To compliment the new radar network and communications package, Norcontrol IT's market leading Port Management Information System (PMIS) will assist the MMA to manage their resources and provide data for the EU's SafeSeaNet.

Steve Guest at Norcontrol IT said “The MMA is a top-class organisation with a long, respected position in the maritime community. Strategically positioned, Malta is extremely important to the EU and Norcontrol IT looks forward to being able to provide the Maltese Government with the very best maritime domain awareness solution.”
