Norcontrol IT has launched its brand new Maritime Domain Awareness application. The C-Scope Operator Display is a Graphical Information System designed to provide real-time situational awareness for tracking vessels and their consignment on sea and land. The sophisticated display is able to visualise data from any tracking system and for the first time provides an operator with the ability to view the service area from literally anywhere, including onboard a vessel in 3 dimensions (3D). The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is Norcontrol IT's first customer to use the display, which is being installed at the MCA's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres as part of the UK AIS network program.
The C-Scope Operator Display is the first in a series of new products included in the C-Scope range, Norcontrol IT's 7th generation Maritime Domain Awareness solution. The new display is based on Teleplan's Maria core, a sophisticated Graphical Information System used by US Defence and NATO Armed Forces.
The C-Scope Operator Display is a high performance track display application that collects, filters and displays objects tracked by radar, AIS and Inmarsat C. Optimum situational awareness is provided in a single graphical display for real-time observation, planning and analysis activities within the maritime domain. The 3D presentation includes a library of vessel models to provide operators with as realistic a picture as possible.
A broader view of the vessel's surroundings is achieved with the C-Scope Operator Display, says Alisdair MacDonald, Project Manager for C-Scope at Norcontrol IT. Utilising S-57 charts and digital terrain maps, a traditional 2D presentation is provided whilst on the same screen the 3D presentation shows a view from the vessel or from any given position, angle or altitude selected by the operator. This provides the user with the information needed to make a confident assessment of any real-time situation.
Once the ship is alongside, the cargo onboard can be tracked from the ship to the container yard and onward by truck and railway, until it reaches the factory or retailer. This facility enables ports to provide a value added service to their customers.
The 2D presentation moves effortlessly to and from land and sea domains. The 3D presentation is based on Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) and USGS Digital Elevation Maps (DEM), and works together with its 'lock and track' and 'fly through' modes of operation to provide real-time images.
The C-Scope Operator Display also provides the ability to import satellite and aerial photographs and geoalign them with S-57 ENCs and a multitude of land maps using different projections, thus maintaining the positional accuracy of any tracked object or overlays.
Norcontrol IT is the first maritime domain awareness solution provider to break the land/sea divide and achieve this level of tracking proficiency and full situational awareness by implementing a 3D presentation in addition to a traditional 2D presentation within our operator display application, says Jan Anders Horntvedt, Managing Director, Norcontrol IT. The C-Scope family of products is a result of our commitment to R&D and the continuing development we employ across all of our systems for the benefit of our customers.
