New smelting technology at Elkem

Elkem plans to spend USD 200 million (NOK 1.8 billion) through 2003 modernising its aluminium plant at Mosjøen on Norway’s west coast. The idea is to nearly double the productivity of Elkem’s workforce. The Mosjøen smelting plant is already considered one of the industry’s most efficient facilities in terms of operational costs. Norway produces about a million tonnes of aluminium yearly, about 4 percent of the world’s production. When the Mosjøen plant is upgraded it will account for a quarter of Norway’s production.
