New mobility grant under the FRIPRO scheme

The mobility grant is a completely new application type under the funding scheme for independent projects (FRIPRO) and is designed to promote mobility and enhance career development among young researchers. Applicants must have successfully defended their doctoral thesis less than six years ago to be eligible for a FRIPRO mobility grant.

Increasing the number of Norwegian researchers conducting research stays at top institutions abroad is an overall Research Council objective. Activities abroad enable researchers to develop their independence, establish their own networks and co-author publications with researchers other than their doctoral supervisors.

The FRIPRO mobility grant has a three-year timeframe. The first two years are to be spent at an institution abroad with the third year in Norway.

The scheme involves cooperation with a Norwegian host institution that “lends” a researcher to an institution abroad and receives funding for a year of reintegration upon the researcher’s return. This enables both the Norwegian host institution and the researcher him- or herself to put the knowledge and networks gained during the stay abroad to use at home.

Funding for 14 grants

Funding is available for 14 FRIPRO mobility grants in 2014, with a total budget of roughly NOK 45 million. The distribution among the scheme’s three areas of science is as follows:

  • Medicine, Health Sciences and Biology: 6 grants
  • Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology: 4 grants
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: 4 grants

Double stamp of quality

FRIPRO mobility grants are jointly funded by the Research Council (60 per cent) and the EU’s Marie Curie Actions – Co-funding of Regional, National, and International Programmes (COFUND) (40 per cent). Researchers who win a FRIPRO mobility grant therefore receive a double stamp of quality from the FRIPRO scheme and from Marie Curie Actions.

“A recurring comment in the evaluations of grant applications submitted to the European Research Council (ERC) is that young Norwegian researchers are not mobile enough,” says Per Ivar Høvring, the Research Council’s contact person vis-à-vis the ERC. The new grant scheme will help to remedy this.

Applications for mobility grants will be assessed by the same referee panels and Expert Committees as the other grant applications submitted under the FRIPRO scheme. The submission deadline is 21 May – also the same as for applications for other FRIPRO projects in 2014. Funding announcements for FRIPRO mobility grants will be issued in 2015 and 2016 as well.

Other mobility schemes
The Research Council has existing grant schemes for shorter stays abroad (3–12 months) for research fellows affiliated with a Research Council-funded project. It is also possible to apply for funding to spend an entire post-doctoral fellowship period abroad. The new FRIPRO mobility grant is designed to supplement these opportunities.
