New counts of wild salmon and escaped fish show big differences

While the wild salmon stocks in many rivers in Ryfylke are relatively strong, the populations in Hardanger remain low and vulnerable, with increased competition from farmed fish. This is revealed in a new report from scientists at Uni Research Environment.

Last autumn a large research team performed counts of spawners in 50 rivers in western Norway. The counts took place along the coast from Vest-Agder, Rogaland and Hordaland to Sogn og Fjordane.

Researchers snorkelled down into the rivers and recorded wild salmon, sea trout and escaped farmed salmon. The new report shows significant regional differences in the density of wild salmon in the rivers, and in the proportion of escaped farmed fish.

“This report is important and relevant in relation to wild salmon and the problem of escapees. These latest findings give the administration a better basis for decision making,” said research leader Bjørn Barlaup of the Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries.
