The Defence Department has spent more than NOK 50 million on establishing a new coastal monitoring center, in order to keep track of the increasing transport of Russian oil by tankers along the Norwegian coast, Aftenposten reports.

Only last month 24 Russian tankers on their way to the world market passed along the coast, and it is expected that the traffic will increase over the coming years.

It is the Coastal Administration which is responsible for safety along the coast, and the Norwegian Defence is on the whole in charge of carrying out the practical side of the service.

There are now three tugboats on emergency stand-by in Northern Norway.
