Microplastic may pose threat to safe seafood

10 percent of all plastic produced in the world ends up in oceans. Norwegian researchers want to investigate the effects on marine life.

Today, researchers do not know much about the impact of plastic particles on ocean life or about any effects they may have on marine organisms and the marine ecosystem. A new research project, headed by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), will further investigate these issues. The project was presented at the recent doctoral and research seminar for the Research Programme on the Oceans and Coastal Areas (HAVKYST).

The scientists are especially interested in exploring whether microplastics rise up the food. These findings will provide the grounds for determining whether the interactions between plastics and sea animals pose a previously unknown risk to seafood as a safe source of nutrition.
