Merged food chains seek growth abroad

One of Norway's largest grocery store chains is merging with the dominant owner of Norwegian newsstands and corner stores, forming a retail powerhouse that plans to expand outside of Norway and Scandinavia.

The deal joins Reitan Gruppen, with its 467 "Rema 1000" grocery stores in five countries, and Narvesen AS, with its 460 newsstands and 320 "7-Eleven" corner stores. The merged company, to be named Reitan Narvesen ASA, will have 17,000 employees and a projected annual turnover of USD 2.15 billion (NOK 20 billion).
