Making a pledge to shift research into a higher gear

At the beginning of 2014, the first research budget of Norway’s new Minister of Education and Research, Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, goes into effect – a budget he says will shift research into a higher gear.

The Conservative Party, which is the largest partner in the new two-party government, is considered to be a party for people of affluence by many Norwegians. This stereotype is hardly fitting of Norway’s new Minister of Education and Research, who grew up in a terraced house outside a typical industrial city in a family dominated by teachers. 

While Torbjørn Røe Isaksen attended lower secondary school and then upper secondary school, a wave of political engagement swept through Porsgrunn, a city with a large population of industrial workers. His friends joined the Labour Party’s youth group; Mr Røe Isaksen chose the Conservative Party – a very conscious choice, he says.
