Major cost-saving opportunities for the sector

The Bergen-based company Karsten Moholt is the first in the world to become a DNV (Det Norske Veritas) approved provider of Condition Monitoring Servicesfor mobile offshore units. This represents a significant cost-saving potential for the oil and shipping industry.

At present, the sector performs maintenance on machinery and components at set intervals, and as a result, excessive or low maintenance is often carried out. Perfectly good parts are replaced, and this costs the industry large amounts of money annually. To perform maintenance when the need arises is a far better solution, says Tommy Glesnes, head of the department for Condition Monitoring at Karsten Moholt.

Karsten Moholt is the first company in the world to become an “Approved service provider for Condition Monitoring Services for mobile offshore units”, a certification awarded by DNV. This means that the company continuously performs vibration measurements of important machinery and components for its customers. It is thus possible to establish whether components are worn and when any maintenance is required.

- This equals to major cost-savings for the customers. A far more flexible maintenance process is achieved, and machinery is only opened up when necessary. In other words, the maintenance process is de-optimised, machines become more reliable and any downtime is significantly reduced. Maintenance is only carried out when necessary, says Glesnes, and adds that the DNV certification will validate the quality of the work being performed and increase customer confidence.

The certification covers all mobile offshore units such as oil installations, FPSOs and will accordingly also cover standard vessels. Although the system is ideal for the most critical equipment, any machinery can be included in the program. According to DNV, Condition Based Maintenance has proven to be a better and more cost-efficient maintenance strategy than systems such as traditional periodic maintenance based on a calendar or hour meter.
