Norwegian processor Lofotprodukt is hoping to win over more French households to its fish burgers, which it says are made with 80% fish.
The Kverva-owned processor, which owns the Lofoten and Madam Bergen brands, was showcasing the burgers at the Sirha foodservice trade show in Lyon, France, this week.
The burger has been successful in Norway and is already sold in France, as a "burger marin", under the Lofoten brand (see picture).
The product has proved particularly popular among families, and among busy working women keen to have a healthy and quick alternative for their lunch, said Lofotprodukt.
"We're proud of having introduced Lofoten's fish burgers into French shops," said Lofotprodukt sales director Oystein Rist in a statement. "Now we're working on spreading [it] further out to a large and quality-conscious French market."
Lofotprodukt, which bought Domstein's Swedish business last year, was also showcasing whole, round 'skrei', the Norwegian word for a particular type of Arctic cod.
The company launched its first Lofoten-branded skrei at Sirha. Visitors were invited to hold a life-size skrei imitation, which is part of the group's "hold the cod" advertising campaign.
Founded in 1994, Lofotprodukt has its main factory in Leknes, in Lofoten, as well as a plant in Bergen and sales offices in Oslo, and, since its acquisition of Domstein Foods, a plant in Kungshamn and two in Lysekil.
It mainly sells to the Nordic market. Sales within Norway reached NOK 312 million in 2013, while total sales for the company are expected to have reached NOK 800m last year.
The company's owner, Kverva, is the investment fund of the Witzoe family. It is the majority owner of the salmon producer Salmar, and controls 50% of the new pelagic powerhouse Pelagiathrough its subsidiary, Kvefi.
