Kværner opens door to Røkke

To quell shareholder turmoil, the Norwegian industrial conglomerate Kværner said it will hold an extraordinary general meeting in the next few weeks to select a new board member acceptable to Kjell Inge Røkke, whose company, Aker Maritime, recently became Kværner’s largest single shareholder. Mr. Røkke and his spokesmen have blasted Kværner leadership in an effort the gain influence over the faltering company, which many analysts consider a likely merger partner for Aker Maritime. Both are major players in the offshore petroleum services industry.
