Kongsberg Maritime receives full S-VDR type approval

The Maritime Black Box-S (MBB-S), Kongsberg Maritime's flexible S-VDR solution has received full DnV Type Approval status, following approval of the 'float free' PSU (protected Storage Unit) option in September 2005.

The Maritime Black Box-S (MBB-S), Kongsberg Maritime's flexible S-VDR solution has received full DnV Type Approval status, following approval of the 'float free' PSU (protected Storage Unit) option in September 2005. With DnV approval for the 'fixed' PSU option received in February 2005, the MBB-S is now a fully approved S-VDR solution with a choice of PSU type.

The MBB-S is a cost-effective S-VDR solution designed for vessels built before 1st July 2002 that under IMO regulations are required to retrofit S-VDR equipment. The system is based on Kongsberg Maritime's full VDR system (MBB) and provides functionality for training and reporting in addition to its core remit of incident/accident data recording.

With a choice of fixed or float free PSU options, both fully Type Approved, the MBB-S provides flexibility for different vessel types and configuration. This flexibility is extended with a choice of installation packages. Kongsberg Maritime engineers can provide Turn-key Installation or help and assistance for a Guided Installation. Alternatively a Fleet Agreement provides full S-VDR installation training, enabling client engineers to retrofit entire fleets.

“The MBB-S has been developed to provide cost-effective and flexible solutions to the mandatory S-VDR requirements, but actually exceeds the requirements to become a valid operational tool,” comments Einar Strand, Business Development Manager at Kongsberg Maritime. “Following the most recent DnV approval, we can now offer a system that meets all requirements regardless of the type of PSU chosen, making the MBB-S the most flexible approved S-VDR solution available.”

Fixed PSU
The MBB-S fixed storage unit is fully IMO compliant. It consists of a mounting base, which is directly fastened to the ship and provides a water tight cable entry for power and Ethernet connections, and a removable protective capsule that is attached to the mounting base with a quick releasing v-band clamp.

The fixed storage unit has an externally mounted Underwater Location Beacon (ULB) that it is painted a highly visible fluorescent orange with white reflective labels and SOLAS reflective tape. The reflective labels contains the required text: VOYAGE DATA RECORDER, DO NOT OPEN, REPORT TO AUTHORITIES.

Technical specifications

Float free PSU
The multipurpose float free storage unit contains both storage media for S-VDR (Simplified Voyage Data Recorder) and a conventional GMDSS satellite position-indicating radio beacon, EPIRB.

The float free storage unit contains at all times the last 12 hours of recorded data. The unit floats to the surface keeping the S-VDR information available even if the vessel should sink. No expensive and time consuming under water search is required. Identification and positioning is done via satellite.
