Kongsberg Automotive's expanding activities in Brazil have created the basis for a new 3,500 square meter manufacturing plant in the city of Jundiai, some 70 km outside Sao Paulo. The plant was formally inaugurated on November 29th, 2006 with the presence of more than 40 guests representing customers, suppliers, local authorities and business partners. Order from new customer
Kongsberg Automotive has been present in the Brazilian market since 2000 supplying automotive parts to Scania Latin America and Volvo do Brasil. In 2004 Kongsberg Automotive in Brazil became the chosen supplier of mechanical gearshift to Volkswagen new truck line "Constellation". Volkswagen Trucks is a new customer for Kongsberg Automotive Group. Serial deliveries started in beginning of 2006. At full volumes the annual deliveries are expected to reach 25.000 gearshift systems per year. The Volkswagen gearshift system is the first Kongsberg Automotive product that is developed entirely for a Brazilian customer and fully adapted for local production conditions in order to meet local requirements. "The new plant allows Kongsberg Automotive to meet the growing demand for our products in Brazil. We expect the unit in Brazil to grow significantly over the next few years". This statement was made by Mr. Olav Volldal, CEO of Kongsberg Automotive Holding in his presentation at the inauguration. Mr. Trond Fiskum, Managing Director of Kongsberg Automotive in Brazil believes that the potential in the South America market for Kongsberg Automotive products is large and says that they are working on several new prospects with existing and new customers. He adds that in the future there is also likely to be interesting export opportunities for Kongsberg Automotive Brazilian operations due to low Brazilian production costs.
Broad portfolio of products
Kongsberg Automotive in Brazil supplies South American truck and bus manufacturers with clutch actuation systems, gearshift systems, anti-roll bar (cabin stabilizers) and air couplings. The company has currently 50 employees and a turnover in 2006 of 55 MNOK.
