The new Centre for Cancer Biomarkers (CCBIO) at the University of Bergen will conduct in-depth studies of the microenvironment of cancerous tumours, hunting for biomarkers to aid physicians in selecting the best targeted treatment.
Cancer today is understood as a disease with many forms. Treatment tailored to the individual may be the best way to beat it.
“This is just one of many examples,” explains CCBIO director Lars A. Akslen. “Imagine what we could spare patients and society in terms of discomfort and expenditures if we could identify beforehand which patients would benefit from a medicine! It becomes clearer every day that biomarkers are the key to making that scenario a reality.”
