The exploration for oil and gas on the Norwegian Shelf has so far this year been greater than expected, according to a survey by the Oil Directorate.

So far, 19 exploratory drillings have been started. At the beginning of the year, the Directorate estimated that only 15 exploratory wells would be drilled on the Norwegian Shelf this year.

This would in case have been a considerable drop from earlier years, Nettavisen writes.

Around 60 per cent of the Norwegian Shelf is now open to exploration, but only 9 per cent of this area is covered by production licenses.

Estimates made by the Oil Directorate show that the Norwegian Shelf still hides volumes of undiscovered resources which are at least as large as those produced over the past 30 years.
