Herring and Mackerel Export Increased in February

Pelagic fish worth NOK 992 million were exported in February 2011, representing an increase of NOK 172 million, or 21%, on February 2010. In February, the value of herring exports increased by 28% to NOK 730 million, and the value of mackerel exports increased by 30% to NOK 240 million.

So far this year, exports of pelagic fish have amounted to NOK 1.8 million, or 20% higher than the same period in 2010.

"The February figures reflect the high prices for frozen herring and frozen herring products that have been achieved in the markets. We must see this in relation to the fact that we are at the beginning of a year with a Norwegian spring-spawning herring quota that has been reduced by around a third from last year," says Senior Analyst Kristin Lien, at the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. "We are also experiencing a greater export of mackerel than in the same month last year, while most of the eating capelin season is a little delayed."

Herring to Nigeria
66,000 tonnes of frozen whole herring were exported in February, which is 29,000 tonnes less than the same month last year. The herring has mainly been exported to the markets in Nigeria (23,000 tonnes), the Ukraine (12,000 tonnes) and Russia (12,000 tonnes) and the prices have been, on average, 56% higher in February of this year than February last year.

Herring fillets to Germany
30,000 tonnes of frozen herring fillets were exported in February, which is 2,000 tonnes more than the same month last year. The herring fillets have mainly been sent to the markets in Germany (15,000 tonnes) and Russia (7,000 tonnes). Prices have been, on average, 57% higher in February this year than February last year.

A lot of mackerel in February
21,000 tonnes of frozen mackerel were exported in February this year, which is an increase of 4,000 tonnes on February last year. The mackerel has been exported to the markets in Turkey (4,000 tonnes), South Korea (4,000 tonnes), Russia (3,000 tonnes) and Nigeria (3,000 tonnes). The average price of frozen whole mackerel in February has been NOK 11.12 or NOK 0.64 higher than in the same month last year.
