A ground breaking ceremony at Aukra in Romsdal on Friday, marked the start of the construction of the shore terminal for the Ormen Lange gas field.

The Ormen Lange project will be the largest industrial development ever in Norway.

From the start, 600 workers will be engaged in the project, but by 2006, between 2000 and 2500 people will be at work on the terminal, says project director Terje Uthus.

The total cost of the Ormen Lange project, including the offshore installations, the pipelines and the shore terminal is estimated at NOK 66 billion.

THe construction will be completed by 2007, and most of the gas produced will be transported to Great Britain through the world's longest subsea pipleline.
