Good HSE development on the Norwegian Shelf

Once again, the PSA's annual review of the risk level on the Norwegian Shelf shows positive development. "We are pleased that the industry's work is yielding results," says Knut Thovaldsen of OLF.

Each year, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) issues the report Risk level in the petroleum activity (RNNP). The report is the most important compendium of facts the oil and gas industry has to describe the status of health, safety and environment (HSE) in the industry.

Once again, the report confirms that the oil and gas industry has the will and the ability to improve HSE standards. We are particularly pleased with the reduction in gas leaks and well incidents,” says Knut Thorvaldsen, director of HSE and operations in OLF.

No resting on laurels
RNNP gives the industry a good picture of the long-term development trends within HSE.

Even though the industry achieved good results yet again, those of us who work with HSE are very aware that we cannot rest on our laurels. The industry will continue its commitment to work to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries,” says Thorvaldsen.

Focused work
As emphasised by the PSA, a natural conclusion is that the improvements in 2011 come as a result of focused work by the industry.

We will continue our commitment within the important areas of gas leaks and well incidents in an effort to further reduce the risk of major accidents. In addition, projects such as Noise in the petroleum industry will provide important contributions towards reducing the risk of noise-related injuries to the employees,” says Thorvaldsen.
The industry will also continue its work to reduce the number of serious personal injuries, which in this year’s RNNP report shows a decline compared with the previous ten-year period.

Prioritise what’s important
RNNP is the factual basis which shows authorities, the trade unions and the industry where HSE efforts must be aimed in order to achieve maximum reduction in the risk o f accidents and injuries.

It is also important that the parties in the tripartite cooperation choose to focus their efforts on the most important areas. Both the authorities, the trade unions and the industry must prioritise in a way that ensures that we devote our time and energy to issues that yield the greatest returns in terms of safety,” says Thorvaldsen.
