From Bunker To Boardroom, Norwegian Veterans Get A Shot At Business

Most ArcticStartup readers will know all about Startup Weekends. In Norway the 54-hour events have been the breeding ground of many innovative businesses, including Soundrop, ClickLift, Pido and Swipe.

Now all the way from San Diego comes an event with a twist, as Startup Weekend Oslo's Project Manager Erik Holthe Eriksen explains.

“We see veterans of the armed forces as a great resource, and understand that the transition to civilian can be difficult for some. We want to help make this transition easier, by helping to release the unique skills, experience and potential into the world of entrepreneurship.”

“We will create a venue where veterans can meet, get help to develop their ideas and connect with good partners for the further development toward industry.”

“Our vision is that Norwegian veterans should be accepted as the huge resource for the community and the business community, and that a good system for entrepreneurs from veteran community in Norway can gather, network, acquire the necessary skills and tools to contribute to sustainable economic development and value.”

This is your new mission and you will have to bootstrap

You may wonder what skills veterans can bring to the entrepreneurial table. Eriksen has no doubt:

“I think military veterans have an advantage ahead of many others. They are used to missions that are too important to implement without a solid plan. They are used to working in teams, taking care of each other, multitasking and getting the job done.”

The first veterans event held in San Diego last year was a overwhelming success. Ideas ranged from a crowd funding platform for service disabled veteran startups to an audio-clip based social network.

“We saw what they did in San Diego, and had long been toying with the idea of doing the same in Norway. When it turned out that both veteran organisation Making Change and consultants Frisch AS worked with similar concepts, so it was logical to join forces and launch.”

Many developers, entrepreneurs and veterans have already signed up to the event in Oslo from 26-28 April. Registration remains free until this Friday.

A former IT Project Manager, David Nikel now works as a technology writer in Norway. He helps Norwegian companies communicate in English and reports on the entrepreneurial scene for ArcticStartup.
