The oil industry is now in the process of hiring, training and equipping 30-40 larger fishing vessels as part of the oil protection measures to be put into service on the coast of Finnmark county.

An improved type of service vessel will also be built for Arctic conditions, equipped to withstand icing, large waves and drifting ice. It will also be equipped wit a new type of radar which will be able to detect oil spills even in darkness and bad weather, Aftenposten reports.

The plan is that these vessels will be ready for service well before the drilling starts on the Goliat Field, located 85 kilometres north west of Hammerfest, the first well to be drilled in the Norwegian sector of the Barents Sea.

Preparations begin this summer, and the first drilling start in 2011. Production is expected to start in 2012.
