EU debate on hold

Labour Party chief Thorbjørn Jagland said it is unlikely Norway will seek membership in the European Union before 2005.

Although six years have passed since Norwegian voters rejected EU membership, Jagland's party is divided over whether it should restart public debate on the issue. Jagland said that in any case Norway should refrain from applying for EU membership until a large majority of the population indicates its support. Current polls show Norwegians leaning against membership.
