Enhancing international research cooperation on renewable energy

Most of the projects that have received funding under the Large-scale Programme on Clean Energy for the Future (RENERGI) and its successor, the Large-scale Programme for Energy Research (ENERGIX), incorporate active international collaboration.

Approximately half of the international project partners are from universities and research institutes in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, while roughly one-third are in Germany and somewhat fewer are in the US. These figures have emerged from a survey of 200 projects under the two programmes.

Rune VollaRune Volla“One of the Research Council's strategic objectives is to strengthen international cooperation within its projects,” says Rune Volla, Director of the Department for Energy at the Research Council. “The survey shows that Norwegian research groups in the field of renewable energy are well on their way.”

Priority partners

The aspirations for Norwegian participation in projects on renewable energy funded by the EU or by the International Energy Agency are especially high.

Moreover, in keeping with the Government's aim to increase research cooperation with for Asian countries such as China, India and Japan, the Research Council is now assessing whether calls for proposals should specify to a greater extent which countries the applicants must include in collaboration.

China, India and Japan comprise three of the eight countries that the Research Council has defined as the most important for Norwegian research cooperation. The other key countries are: Brazil, Canada, Russia, South Africa and the US.
