Detailed overview yields environmental results

“The data is very detailed and enables us to set proactive environmental goals,” says Tore Killingland, director of strategy and environment in the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF).

 

The operating companies on the Norwegian shelf report all planned, authority-approved operational emissions/discharges, as well as any accidental emissions/discharges to a database. OLF’s environmental report is based on this database, and provides a unique overview of all imaginable emissions to air and discharges to sea.

"If a litre of oil is accidentally discharged, this is registered, reported and included in the environmental report. We have a very good overview of the emissions/discharges from offshore activities. We can thus set proactive environmental goals and check goal achievement from year to year,” says Killingland.

One example of this is the 1997 goal of reducing discharges of added, toxic chemicals (so-called red and black chemicals) from activities on the Norwegian shelf. In the same year the goal was set, 3933 tonnes of red chemicals and 228 tonnes of black chemicals were discharged. The 2012 report documents a reduction to 8.1 and 0.6 tonnes, respectively.

“We will most likely never reach zero. In some cases we must use chemicals for safety reasons. But for all practical purposes, discharge of red and black chemicals is a thing of the past,” says Killingland.

 Accessible to everyone
True to tradition, the environmental report will be published in Norwegian and English. In addition, all information will also be published on a designated website. For the first time there will also be Norwegian and English iPad versions of the report, available through the App Store.

“We are always searching for good solutions to make technical subject matters more interesting and accessible. The iPad version includes considerable supplementary information which could obviously not be communicated in the printed format. We hope increased accessibility and more user-friendly solutions can contribute to increasing public awareness as regards the petroleum industry’s environmental reporting, and that we thus achieve an even more fact-oriented debate in Norway,” says Killingland.
